Don’t all modern cars lock them automatically when you drive over 10 mph? I have never been in a car built later than 1990 that didn’t have automatic locks.

All but one of my family’s seven post-1990 cars (my Focus being the exception) didn’t have automatic locks. Maybe it’s a regional thing, is it very common in Europe?

That’s what I was thinking, probably a regional thing, never seen that in south america on newer cars.

European here. I’ve never been inside a car that had those. (Or at least I don’t think I have.)

The thing is, I don’t remember if any of the cars I drove in Europe had those, I usually rent Volvo V40s/Citroen DS5 when I’m traveling there alone, and I honestly don’t remember locking the doors while driving.

*South America is what I meant, sorry, forgot you were from Brazil. But yeah I can’t remember the last car I’ve driven/ridden in here in the States that had it, even among the more expensive brands (Buick, Cadillac, BMW, etc.)

I’ve owned early- and mid-90s cars, and driven plenty of 2000s cars, which didn’t automatically lock. Not sure what the breakdown is on new ones but didn’t think it was anywhere near universal.

I have never been inside one of those but I doubt they have automatic locks. I first thought it was an equipment to prevent carjacking but if you’ve never seen them in South America then I don’t know.

Oh no, I’ve never seen cars without them, they are almost universal here.

I think that European spec Golf Mk7 is trying to lock the doors automatically. You can disable this from some menu though. A 90’s Roadmaster that I drove locked all doors if the shifter is in the D position and releases them if the the shifter is placed in N, R or P.

Oh, my bad then. Well, I think they are most likely an equipment common in countries which have a problem with carjackings.

Yeah, most likely, so far the only EU cars I know have 10mph door looks are the Passat and the 500 Abarth.

I think you can disable that feature in some cars. The rental Polo I was in this summer had the feature but for some reason it had been disabled in the car’s settings when we picked it up.

It's not fitted to all cars. I've been in some cars where it locks itself and same model cars with a slightly different spec where it doesn't have it. Mine doesn't but it does lock the tailgate which you can only open from pressing the remote keyfob, pressing the door release in the car or opening one of the other doors so people don't just open the tailgate and steal something while your stopped at the lights.

My Opel Omega/Cadillac Catera/Holden Monaro/Pontiac GTO doesn’t auto lock the doors due to it’s manual transmission. That, and the door lock button in the center console only became sstandard on the 06 model.
Odd because I’ve driven other manual transmission cars that do auto-lock just like an automatic car (after 5MPH).

The 1997 Honda City and 4th generation Hyundai Elantra I’ve driven had automatic locks that only activated when you stepped on the brake pedal. Or randomly when unlocked for the latter.

My ‘06 xB doesn’t, nor did my ‘88 Cutlass Calais which had a worrying habit of suddenly releasing a door in mid-turn, that led me to lock doors obsessively.

It’s usually something the dealer/owner can program, my 2003 BMW doesn’t have it enabled but my 2000 does. My 03 Toyota locks when you shift out of park, the manual describes how to disable or make it lock about 20mph.

My car doesn’t have them (2009 Accent), but then again, my car doesn’t have power locks either, lol! :P

I hate that shit.

I drove my sister’s ‘12 Pilot for 10 minutes yesterday and never knew what doors were locked/unlocked. Unlock them all, put stuff in it, then drive a few blocks, get out and find every door locked. Repeat.

Annoying.

They gave us this cool little button years ago that allows us to lock/unlock/lock/unlock from the comfort of the driver’s seat. They gave us one on the key after that. Do they not trust us to figure this out anymore?

I remember a bunch of late 90s and early 2000s cars automatically locking when you put them into drive, but I can’t remember seeing that recently. That being said, it’s been a while since I’ve been in a car with an auto.

In my 330 and FR-S this is an optional setting. In my previous cars with power locks it wasn’t available, except for my 1996 Buick which did have it.

Every American car my parents have owned in my lifetime (read: all of their cars) have had it that they lock upon startup (Safari) when put into reverse/drive (Silverado, Vue) or when you hit 10-15 mph (Fusion.)

Then there’s my BMW that has a fancy locking system that’ll let you unlock all the doors from the trunk, but doesn’t automatically lock the doors, period. Which I find strange.

No need to lock up if you have a manual (well... odds drastically reduced).

I’ve never owned one that locked automatically, but have been in some GM cars that have, IIRC.

Also, programmable. Must not be mandated (maybe now it is?) but my wife’s ‘07 bmw doesn’t do it, nor does my ‘03. My ‘01 suburban did though...

I hate doors that lock when you start moving. On vehicles that I’ve had with that feature I’ve disabled it as soon as I’ve figure out how.

I first came across this on American hire cars and assumed it was an American nanny thing but then I had a Smart (in France) which did the same. In any case it can be enabled or disabled to taste.

I've got a 2005 crown Vic that doesn't automatically lock, but my 2001 expedition had auto locks, I don't know if there was a industry standard or if it wentodel by model.

Not that I know of. I always lock the doors anyway, ever since I was in a roll-over.
